The Career Farm Podcast Episode 64 - The things mentally strong people don't do when job seeking - with Amy Morin

Amy Morin is the a bestselling Author of 13 Things Mentally Strong People Don't Do and in our interview we discuss how relevant her book is to people job searching or changing careers.

A trained psychotherapist, Amy originally wrote an article on "the 13 things mentally strong people don't do" as a letter to herself.

The Career Farm Podcast Episode 64 - with Amy MorinShe had been through a series of losses.  At 23 years old her mother died suddenly, and then 3 years later she lost her husband.  In the process of dealing with her loss and working with her clients she noticed that some people get stuck when facing adversity and other people find ways to move forward.

Later when she was facing her father in law's diagnosis of terminal cancer she wanted to know how to deal with the pain and stay mentally strong. So she sat down and wrote her list of what things mentally strong people don't do.

This list went viral with over 10 million views, leading to an opportunity to write a book which has since been translated into 23 languages.

When dealing with job hunting or career change, Amy says it's particularly important to regulate your thoughts so you are not overly negative. Try and control your emotions and make sure your behaviour is productive.

So before you walk through the door you mentally prepare by running through why you can do this job and try and crowd out negative thinking.

In practical terms this might be repeating a mantra or having some positive notes to read before you walk through the door. It's about acting confidently before you actually feel confident - a process called 'acting as if'.

When job hunting or changing career mentally strong people don't:

  • Give up. Most successful people have lengthy experiences of failure
  • Fear taking a calculated risk - what is the risk of not taking risk!
  • Focus on things they can't control
  • Expect immediate results
